Según la versión oficial de los hechos, la lluviosa mañana del 24 de julio de 1911, el joven profesor de Yale, Hiram Bingham III, en su búsqueda de la Ciudad Perdida de los incas en los Andes peruanos, dio con las ruinas de una antigua ciudad oculta entre nubes y vegetación: La impresionante ciudadela de Machu Picchu, el descubrimiento arqueológico más famoso del siglo XX. Transcurridos cien años del hallazgo, a los misterios que rodean a las ruinas se le une la polémica en torno a la figura de su descubridor, al que acusan de sacar de forma ilegal numerosos objetos de un valor incalculable y quedarse para él solo con el mérito de haber encontrado uno de los lugares arqueológicos más importantes del mundo.

Mark Adams, un editor de una revista de viajes de aventura, harto de ver pasar la acción por delante de su mesa de trabajo, decide lanzarse a la aventura y rehacer los pasos del explorador con el objetivo de resolver los numerosos misterios que siguen sin respuesta sobre Machu Picchu, los incas y la figura de Hiram Bingham III. Un descabellado plan, especialmente para alguien que nunca ha dormido en una tienda de campaña, en el que contará con la ayuda de un experimentado y aguerrido australiano, además de varios indígenas y sus mulas, con los que recorrerá un terreno tan duro como espectacular.

Adams nos transporta a través de un relato extremadamente entretenido, didáctico e inspirador por algunos de los paisajes más magníficos y con más historia de Perú; desde la antigua capital inca de Cuzco hasta las enigmáticas ruinas de Vitcos y Vilcabamba, recorriendo los caminos incas, pasando por collados a mas de 4.000 metros, selvas nubosas y paisajes desolados. En el camino encuentra un país aún por descubrir repleto de geniales y excéntricos personajes, mientras da respuesta a algunos de los enigmas mejor guardados: ¿Fue Hiram Bingham un héroe o un villano? ¿Para qué se construyó el Camino Inca? ¿Qué fue Machu Picchu?
